SUBJ/OBSERVANCE OF 2011 HOLOCAUST DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE//

RMKS/1.  THIS YEAR'S HOLOCAUST DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE - THEMED "JUSTICE AND 
ACCOUNTABILITY IN THE FACE OF GENOCIDE: WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED?" - WILL BE 
OBSERVED FROM 1-8 MAY 2011.

2.  ESTABLISHED BY CONGRESS IN 1980 AS THE NATION'S ANNUAL COMMEMORATION OF 
THE HOLOCAUST, THE DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE WILL OPEN WITH OBSERVANCE OF "YOM 
HASHOAH" OR HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY.

3.  OF NOTE, THIS YEAR MARKS THE 65TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST NUREMBERG TRIAL 
VERDICTS, AND THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TRIAL OF ADOLF EICHMANN, THE MAN 
RECOGNIZED AS THE PRINCIPAL ORGANIZER OF THE HOLOCAUST.  BOTH TRIALS RAISED 
SIGNIFICANT QUESTIONS ABOUT THE NATURE OF JUSTICE, WHILE SETTING IMPORTANT 
PRECEDENTS FOR THE PROSECUTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS AS WAR CRIMES.

4.  THE HOLOCAUST WAS THE STATE-SPONSORED, SYSTEMATIC ANNIHILATION OF EUROPEAN 
JEWS BY NAZI GERMANY AND ITS COLLABORATORS.  BETWEEN 1933 AND 1945, MORE THAN 
SIX MILLION JEWS WERE MURDERED.  ADDITIONALLY, MILLIONS OF POLES, SOVIET 
PRISONERS OF WAR, GYPSIES, JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES, POLITICAL DISSIDENTS, THE 
PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY DISABLED , AND HOMOSEXUALS ALSO SUFFERED GRIEVOUS 
PERSECUTION UNDER NAZI TYRANNY .

5.  CHARTERED BY A UNANIMOUS ACT OF CONGRESS, THE UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST 
MEMORIAL MUSEUM IN WASHINGTON, DC, IS AMERICA'S NATIONAL INSTITUTION FOR THE 
DOCUMENTATION, STUDY, AND INTERPRETATION OF THE HOLOCAUST SO THAT THIS TRAGIC 
HISTORY IS NEVER FORGOTTEN.
IT STRIVES TO BROADEN PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF THIS DARK PERIOD THROUGH 
ARTIFACTS, EXHIBITIONS, RESEARCH, AND PUBLICATION; DISTRIBUTION OF EDUCATION 
MATERIALS AND TEACHER RESOURCES; AND A VARIETY OF PUBLIC PROGRAMMING TO 
ENHANCE UNDERSTANDING OF THE HOLOCAUST AND THE PLIGHT OF THE MANY MILLIONS 
AFFECTED BY IT.

6.  ALL COMMANDS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THE HOLOCAUST 
MEMORIAL MUSEUM, THE DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE, AND HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY 
THROUGH PARTICIPATION IN RELATED MILITARY AND COMMUNITY EVENTS, PROGRAMS AND
