RMKS/1.  THIS NAVADMIN HIGHLIGHTS THE DOD PRISONER OF WAR/MISSING IN 
ACTION (POW/MIA) PUBLIC AWARENESS PROGRAM AND SOLICITS SUPPORT FOR THE 
2008 NATIONAL POW/MIA RECOGNITION DAY.
2.  TRADITIONALLY, NATIONAL POW/MIA RECOGNITION DAY IS OBSERVED ON THE 
THIRD FRIDAY OF SEPTEMBER.  TO COMMEMORATE THIS EVENT, THE WHITE HOUSE 
IS EXPECTED TO ISSUE A PRESIDENTIAL PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING 19 SEP 08 
AS NATIONAL POW/MIA RECOGNITION DAY FOR 2008.  WHERE FEASIBLE, NAVY 
COMMANDS ARE ENCOURAGED TO HOST OR SUPPORT LOCAL NATIONAL POW/MIA 
RECOGNITION DAY ACTIVITIES IN THEIR RESPECTIVE AREAS.  THE THEME FOR 
2008 COMMEMORATES THE NATIONAL MEMORIAL CEMETERY OF THE PACIFIC, 
APPROPRIATELY HIGHLIGHTING OUR NATION'S COMMITMENT:  "IN THESE GARDENS 
ARE RECORDED THE NAMES OF AMERICANS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SERVICE 
OF THEIR COUNTRY AND WHOSE EARTHLY RESTING PLACE IS KNOWN ONLY TO GOD."  
ACCCORDINGLY, IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FORMER PRISONERS OF WAR AND 
FAMILY MEMBERS OF HOSTILE UNACCOUNTED-FOR CASUALTIES FROM PAST WARS OR 
CONFLICTS, BE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN THESE EVENTS.
3.  IT IS ONLY FITTING THAT WE WHO SERVE IN THE ARMED FORCES TODAY TAKE 
TIME TO REMEMBER OUR COMRADES WHO UNSELFISHLY GAVE THEIR LIVES IN OUR 
DEFENSE.  THIS IS ALSO AN OCCASION TO RENEW OUR COMMITMENT TO ALL 
FORMER PRISONERS OF WAR AND TO ALL UNACCOUNTED-FOR SERVICE MEMBERS AND 
THEIR FAMILIES FOR THE SACRIFICES THEY HAVE MADE TO 
PROTECT OUR NATION AND THE FREEDOMS WE ENJOY.
