GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  IT IS WITH DEEP SADNESS THAT I REPORT THE PASSING OF AN 
OUTSTANDING NAVAL OFFICER, REAR ADMIRAL KURT KUNKEL, SC, USN ON 28 SEPTEMBER 
2011.  AN ACCOMPLISHED MILITARY PROFESSIONAL WHO PROUDLY WORE THE UNIFORM OF 
THIS GREAT NATION FOR 29 YEARS, RDML KUNKEL WAS A DEVOTED HUSBAND, WONDERFUL 
FRIEND, SHIPMATE AND FATHER WHOSE LIFE LEFT AN UNFORGETTABLE MARK ON ALL HE 
TOUCHED.  WHILE THE PASSING OF RDML KUNKEL IS A TREMENDOUS LOSS TO THE ENTIRE 
NAVY FAMILY, WE SHOULD TAKE A MOMENT AND CELEBRATE HIS REMARKABLE LIFE.

2.  RDML KUNKEL WAS THE COMMANDER OF DEFENSE LOGISTICS AGENCY ENERGY, A FIELD 
ACTIVITY OF THE DEFENSE LOGISTICS AGENCY AT FORT BELVOIR, VA.  A CLASS OF 1982 
GRADUATE FROM THE NAVAL ACADEMY AND AN ACCOMPLISHED SUPPLY CORPS OFFICER, HE 
SERVED AS SUPPLY OFFICER OF FIGHTER SQUADRON 102 EMBARKED IN USS AMERICA (CV 
66), USS MCCANDLESS (FF 1084), USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) AND USS HARRY S. 
TRUMAN (CVN 75).  ASHORE HE MADE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE CONTINUING 
SUPPORT OF OPERATION IRAQI AND ENDURING FREEDOM.  AMONG MANY DISTINGUISHED 
TOURS, RDML KUNKEL SERVED AS CHIEF OF STAFF, DEFENSE LOGISTICS AGENCY; CHIEF, 
STRATEGY DIVISION, DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONAL LOGISTICS, DIRECTOR OF 
LOGISTICS (J4) ON THE JOINT STAFF; AND DEPUTY FOR SUPPLY, ORDNANCE & LOGISTICS 
OPERATIONS (N41) IN THE OFFICE OF THE CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS.

3.  RDML KUNKEL IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE PATTI AND TWO DAUGHTERS.
PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO REFLECT ON AND REMEMBER THIS EXCEPTIONAL MAN, 
EXTRAORDINARY NAVAL OFFICER, AND INCREDIBLE ROLE MODEL.
