GENTEXT/REMARKS/1. FEBRUARY MARKS THE 80TH ANNUAL OBSERVANCE OF
AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH. THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE'S
THEME FOR THIS YEAR S OBSERVANCE IS "REACHING OUT TO YOUTH: A
STRATEGY FOR EXCELLENCE."
2. ALL SAILORS AND NAVY CIVILIAN PERSONNEL MUST CONTINUE TO ENSURE
THAT OUR NATION AND OUR NAVY THRIVE FROM THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF ALL
INDIVIDUALS, TAKE PRIDE IN CELEBRATING OUR DIVERSITY, AND CONTINUE
TO EDUCATE AMERICANS ABOUT AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY AND
CONTRIBUTIONS THAT AFRICAN AMERICANS HAVE MADE.
3. AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL
COMMANDS TO EDUCATE THEIR PERSONNEL ON THE HISTORY AND ACHIEVEMENTS
OF AFRICAN AMERICANS IN OUR NATION S HISTORY AND IN THEIR SERVICE TO
OUR NAVY. AFRICAN AMERICANS HAVE SERVED WITH DISTINCTION IN EVERY
MAJOR CONFLICT FROM THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION TO OPERATION IRAQI
FREEDOM AND AMONG THEM THERE HAVE BEEN 87 MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENTS.
CURRENTLY THERE ARE 72,191 ACTIVE DUTY, 11,331 RESERVE AND 22,758
CIVILIAN AFRICAN AMERICAN PERSONNEL PROUDLY SERVING IN OUR RANKS.
4. COMMANDS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO USE THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY TO
HIGHLIGHT THE VALUE OF OUR NAVY S DIVERSITY, AND THE MANY
ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF AFRICAN AMERICANS, THROUGH LEADERSHIP
OPPORTUNITIES, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, EXHIBITS, PUBLICATIONS AND
MILITARY OR COMMUNITY EVENTS.
