RMKS/1. THIS NAVADMIN ANNOUNCES MARCH AS NAVY NUTRITION MONTH. THIS NATIONAL
NUTRITION INITIATIVE IS IN ALIGNMENT WITH AND SUPPORTS THE SECRETARY OF THE
NAVY'S 21ST CENTURY SAILOR AND MARINE INITIATIVE.
THE GOAL IS TO INCREASE AWARENESS AND TRANSFORM FOOD ENVIRONMENTS NAVY-WIDE TO
FACILITATE AND MAINTAIN BETTER FOOD AND BEVERAGE OPTIONS.
BETTER FOOD CHOICES WILL ENHANCE PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE
NAVY'S EFFORTS TO ACHIEVE A FIT AND READY FORCE.
2. NAVY NUTRITION MONTH EVENTS. ALL NAVY COMMANDS WORLDWIDE ARE ENCOURAGED
TO USE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF FOOD LITERACY AND NAVY
NUTRITION PROGRAMS AND REINFORCE A UNIT CULTURE WHERE "THE HEALTHY CHOICE IS
THE EASY CHOICE." RECOMMENDED EVENTS
INCLUDE: INTERACTIVE WORKSHOPS, CONTESTS, COMPETITIONS, PUBLIC SERVICE
ANNOUNCEMENTS AND TRAINING EVENTS. DOWNLOADABLE NUTRITION MONTH MATERIALS
(INCLUDING PLAN OF THE DAY NOTES, ACTIVITY IDEAS, NATIONAL CAMPAIGN POSTERS
AND BROCHURES) AND TOOLS (E.G., MILITARY NUTRITION ENVIRONMENT ASSESSMENT TOOL
(M-NEAT), GALLEY SELF-ASSESSMENT) ARE AVAILABLE AT

3. RECENT ANALYSIS OF WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE MEASUREMENTS IN PRIMS IDENTIFIED A
HIGH PROPORTION OF SAILORS AT RISK. ACCORDING TO NATIONAL HEART, LUNG AND
BLOOD INSTITUTE GUIDELINES, MALES WHO HAVE A WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE OF 35-39
INCHES ARE AT A MODERATE RISK FOR HEART DISEASE AND DIABETES. MALES WHO HAVE
WAIST CIRCUMFERENCES OF 40 INCHES OR GREATER, ARE AT HIGH RISK FOR HEART
DISEASE, DIABETES, AND SUDDEN DEATH. FEMALES WHO HAVE A WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE
OF 32-35 INCHES ARE AT A MODERATE RISK FOR HEART DISEASE AND DIABETES AND
THOSE WHOSE WAIST MEASUREMENTS EXCEED 36 INCHES ARE AT HIGH RISK FOR HEART
DISEASE, DIABETES AND SUDDEN DEATH.
