RMKS/1. NAVY IS SOLICITING NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2010 CAPT JOY BRIGHT HANCOCK
(JBH) LEADERSHIP AWARDS. THE JBH LEADERSHIP AWARDS HONOR THE VISIONARY
LEADERSHIP OF SERVICE MEMBERS WHOSE IDEALS AND DEDICATION FOSTER A POSITIVE
WORKING ENVIRONMENT FOR REINFORCING AND FURTHERING THE INTEGRATION OF WOMEN
INTO THE NAVY. ESTABLISHED IN 1987, THESE AWARDS ARE PRESENTED ANNUALLY TO
RECOGNIZE THE INSPIRATIONAL LEADERSHIP OF NAVY AND MARINE CORPS SERVICE
MEMBERS ON ACTIVE OR RESERVE DUTY. THE JBH AWARDS ARE CO-SPONSORED BY THE SEA
SERVICE LEADERSHIP ASSOCIATION (SSLA) AND THE MILITARY OFFICERS ASSOCIATION OF
AMERICA (MOAA).
2. THERE ARE SIX AWARDS: TWO SENIOR OFFICERS-O5/O4 (ONE NAVY AND ONE USMC);
TWO JUNIOR OFFICERS-O3 AND BELOW (ONE NAVY AND ONE USMC); AND TWO SENIOR
ENLISTED (ONE NAVY E7 THROUGH E9 AND ONE USMC E7 THROUGH E9). INSPIRATIONAL,
INNOVATIVE, AND IMAGINATIVE NOMINEES SHOULD BE MATURE LEADERS WHO HAVE
DEMONSTRATED LEADERSHIP BOTH ON- AND OFF-DUTY AND HAVE PERSEVERED TO OVERCOME
CHALLENGES WHILE SERVING. NOMINATIONS SHOULD ADDRESS NOMINEES' PROFESSIONAL
ACCOMPLISHMENTS, LEADERSHIP STYLE AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT.
3. CANDIDATES MUST BE NOMINATED BY THEIR COMMANDING OFFICERS (CO) OR
OFFICERS-IN-CHARGE (OIC). ADDITIONAL ENDORSEMENTS ARE NOT NECESSARY AND DO
NOT BEAR WEIGHT ON AWARD SELECTION CRITERIA.
NOMINATION PACKAGES MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
A. CO OR OIC ENDORSEMENT AS COVER PAGE;
B. NOMINATION WRITE-UP NOT TO EXCEED THREE PAGES;
C. NOMINEE'S BIOGRAPHY NOT TO EXCEED ONE PAGE IN LENGTH; AND
D. COMMAND POC'S E-MAIL ADDRESS.

4. NOMINATIONS ARE DUE BY 1700 EST, 23 APRIL 2010. SUBMIT NOMINATION

5. THE NAVY OFFICE OF WOMEN'S POLICY AND SSLA BOARD OF DIRECTORS WILL SELECT
NAVY AWARD RECIPIENTS. THE EQUAL OPPORTUNITY AND DIVERSITY MANAGEMENT BRANCH
AT HQMC WILL SELECT MARINE CORPS RECIPIENTS. COMMANDING OFFICERS WILL BE
INFORMED OF THE AWARD RECIPIENTS NO LATER THAN 7 MAY 2010. THE NAMES OF THE
WINNERS WILL ALSO BE POSTED AT WWW.SEALEADER.ORG AND
WWW.NPC.NAVY.MIL/ABOUTUS/BUPERS/WOMENSPOLICY BY 14 MAY 2010.
6. AWARDS WILL BE PRESENTED AT THE 23RD ANNUAL WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP SYMPOSIUM
SCHEDULED FOR 2-3 JUNE 2010 AT THE WASHINGTON HILTON, WASHINGTON, DC. TRAVEL
EXPENSES TO THE SYMPOSIUM WILL BE SHARED BY THE PARENT COMMAND AND SSLA.
