RMKS/1.  The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) announces the winners of the 
2022 CNO Naval History Essay Contest. 
 
2.  Admiral Gilday announced the annual CNO Essay Contest in reference (a). 
    a.  Due to the exceptional quality of the essays, judging was again 
challenging.  Entrants submitted 71 essays: 8 in the Professional Historian 
category and 63 in the Rising Historian category. 
    b.  Congratulations to the winners and BZ to all the entrants as the 
overall quality of this year's essays was superb. 
 
3.  Winners of the 2022 CNO Naval History Essay Contest. 
    a.  Professional Historian Category: 
        (1)  First Prize: LtCol Peter Owen, USMC (Ret.) for his essay "Marine 
Aviation in the Pacific War: The Right Tool to Support the Fleet, But Seldom 
the Landing Force." 
        (2)  Second Prize: Mr. Andrew Blackley for his essay "An Object 
Lesson on Allied Interoperability: The Failure of the 
ABDA Command, 1942." 
    b.  Rising Historian Category: 
        (1)  First Prize: CDR Matt Wright, USN, for his essay "Just in Time 
Production." 
        (2)  Second Prize: Maj Dustin Nicholson, USMC, for his essay "Some 
Principles of Littoral Campaigns - From the Solomons to the Falkland to 
Today." 
        (3)  Third Prize: LT Kyle Cregge, USN, for his essay "Avoiding 
ABDACOM's Annihilation: Lessons for Today from 1942." 
 
4.  Admiral Gilday will recognize the awardees at a ceremony on 25 October 
2022 in Annapolis, MD.
