RMKS/1. THIS NAVADMIN ANNOUNCES ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS AND APPLICATION
PROCEDURES FOR THE FY-12 MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (MIT)/WOODS
HOLE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTION (WHOI) OCEANOGRAPHY, APPLIED OCEAN SCIENCE AND
ENGINEERING MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAM PER REF A. TWO QUOTAS ARE AVAILABLE FOR
JUNE 2012 STARTS. THIS PROGRAM REQUIRES 27 MONTHS TO COMPLETE. APPLICATIONS
ARE DUE BY 15 DECEMBER 2011 AND SELECTIONS WILL BE MADE BY MARCH 2012.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THE PROGRAM AND REQUIREMENTS CAN BE OBTAINED ONLINE
AT MIT.WHOI.EDU OR FROM THE POC BELOW.
2. ELIGIBILITY AND PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS FOR ACTIVE DUTY OFFICERS IN FY-12
INCLUDE:
A. LT/LCDR UNRESTRICTED LINE (URL) OFFICERS IN DESIGNATOR 112X.
B. LT/LCDR RESTRICTED LINE OFFICERS (RL) IN DESIGNATOR 18XX.
C. USNA/NROTC MIDN ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION IN FY-12.
D. APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS OF MIT /WHOI.
ACADEMIC PROFILE CODE (APC) OF 012 OR BETTER IS RECOMMENDED.
GRADUATE RECORD EXAMINATION (GRE) MUST BE TAKEN WITHIN THE LAST FIVE YEARS.
GRE SCORES OF SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS HAVE GENERALLY EXCEEDED VERBAL 650,
QUANTITATIVE 650, AND ANALYTICAL WRITING 4.0.
E. MUST BE AVAILABLE TO REPORT TO MIT/WHOI IN MID JUNE 2012.
3. THE SELECTEE WILL RETAIN HIS/HER DESIGNATOR AND UPON GRADUATION IS
ELIGIBLE FOR THE 6402P SUBSPECIALTY CODE (OPERATIONAL
OCEANOGRAPHY) AFTER FULLY SATISFYING THE EDUCATIONAL SKILL REQUIREMENTS.
THE PROGRAM IS EXECUTED UNDER A NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL (NPS) APPROVED
EDUCATION PLAN (EP) THAT MEETS THE EDUCATIONAL SKILL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE
6402P SUBSPECIALTY CODE. NO CHANGES MAY BE MADE TO THE APPROVED EP WITHOUT
PRIOR CONSENT OF NPS.
4. SUBMIT APPLICATION AND GRE RESULTS DIRECTLY TO MIT/WHOI TO ARRIVE NO LATER
THAN 15 DECEMBER 2011. APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY.
APPLICATION FORMS AND GRE CODES ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE AT HTTP://MIT.WHOI.EDU BY
FOLLOWING THE ADMISSIONS TAB LOCATED AT THE TOP OF THAT WEB PAGE.
5. APPLICANTS MUST CONTACT THEIR DETAILERS FOR COUNSELING ON THE CAREER
IMPACT OF PARTICIPATION IN THE MIT/WHOI PROGRAM AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR FUTURE
ASSIGNMENTS. FOR CONSIDERATION, DETAILER ENDORSEMENT MUST BE INCLUDED IN THE
APPLICATION PACKAGE.
SAMPLE STATEMENT IS AS FOLLOWS: "I, (DETAILER RANK, NAME, AND TITLE ), HAVE
ADVISED (APPLICANT RANK, NAME) OF THE POTENTIAL CAREER IMPACT OF PARTICIPATING
IN THIS PROGRAM AS WELL AS COMMUNITY REQUIREMENTS WITH RESPECT TO UTILIZATION
OF THE 6402P SUBSPECIALTY CODE."
6. APPLICANTS REQUIRING A NEW GRE TEST SHOULD BE AWARE THAT A REVISED GRE
GENERAL TEST IS BEING IMPLEMENTED IN AUGUST 2011 AND DELAYS MAY OCCUR IN
RECEIVING TEST SCORES, PARTICULARLY FOR PAPER-BASED (VICE COMPUTER-BASED)
