RMKS/1. THIS NAVADMIN ANNOUNCES THE CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS TENTH SEMI-
ANNUAL FLEET DIVERSITY COUNCIL TO BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY,
14 OCTOBER 2009 IN NORFOLK, VA. TWO IDENTICAL SESSIONS WILL BE OFFERED. THE
FIRST SESSION WILL BE HELD FROM 0800 TO 1100 AT THE NAVAL STATION NORFOLK BASE
THEATER AND THE SECOND SESSION WILL BE HELD FROM 1300 TO 1600 AT THE NAVAL AIR
STATION OCEANA BASE THEATER.
2. THE PURPOSE OF THE FLEET DIVERSITY COUNCIL IS TO EDUCATE SAILORS,
OFFICERS, AND CIVILIANS ON THE VALUE OF DIVERSITY AND THE NAVY?S MANY
DIVERSITY INITIATIVES. THIS COUNCIL MEETING SPECIFICALLY TARGETS
PARTICIPATION FROM NAVAL STATION NORFOLK, NAS OCEANA, NAVAL MEDICAL CENTER
PORTSMOUTH, NAVAL AMPHIBIOUS BASE LITTLE CREEK AND NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.
COMMAND FUNDED TRAVEL FROM OTHER AREAS IS AUTHORIZED.
3. COUNCIL ATTENDANCE IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED FOR ALL NAVY PERSONNEL. MAXIMUM
CAPACITY IS 600 FOR NORFOLK BASE THEATER AND 957 FOR OCEANA THEATER, SO THERE
IS NO ATTENDANCE CUTOFF. PLEASE SUBMIT NAMES OF INTERESTED PERSONNEL TO POC
LISTED BELOW. YOUR ASSISTANCE IS NEEDED IN IDENTIFYING VOLUNTEERS TO
PARTICIPATE IN THIS COUNCIL MEETING. VOLUNTEERS ARE SOUGHT FROM ALL RANKS,
RATES, GS LEVELS, AND BACKGROUNDS.
4. BOTH SESSIONS WILL OPEN WITH REMARKS PROVIDED BY A FLAG OFFICER FOLLOWED
BY SEVERAL KEY SPEAKERS HIGHLIGHTING DIVERSITY AND ITS DYNAMIC ROLE IN THE
NAVY AND IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES.
5. THE FIRST SPEAKER, MR. ONDRA BERRY, IS A HIGHLY MOTIVATIONAL AND
INSPIRATIONAL SPEAKER WHOSE PASSION FOR DIVERSITY IS UNMATCHED. HE IS CO-
FOUNDER OF GUARDIAN QUEST, A LEADING PROVIDER OF GROUNDBREAKING,
TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP, ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, AND DIVERSITY
EDUCATION. MR. BERRY IS ALSO A COLONEL IN THE AIR NATIONAL GUARD. THE SECOND
SPEAKER, DR. STEVE ROBBINS, IS A NATIONALLY RENOWNED DIVERSITY EXPERT. HIS
INNOVATIVE AND INCLUSIVE APPROACH TO DIVERSITY HAS EARNED HIM EXTENSIVE
PRAISE. MR. ROBBINS HAS WRITTEN A BOOK ON DIVERSITY ENTITLED ?WHAT IF?: SHORT
STORIES TO SPARK DIVERSITY DIALOGUE.? THE THIRD SPEAKER WILL BE MS. PEGINE
ECHEVARRIA WHO IS ONE OF 58 INDUCTEES INTO THE PRESTIGIOUS MOTIVATIONAL
SPEAKERS HALL OF FAME. THE SOCIETY OF HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (SHRM) NAMED
HER ONE OF 100 GLOBAL THOUGHT LEADERS ON DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION. HER TOPIC,
?WHITE GUYS ARE DIVERSE TOO? IS CERTAIN TO STIMULATE CONVERSATION.
