RMKS/1. NOMINATIONS ARE BEING COLLECTED FOR THE 2011 CAPT JOY BRIGHT HANCOCK
LEADERSHIP AWARDS. THE CAPT JOY BRIGHT HANCOCK LEADERSHIP AWARDS HONOR THE
VISIONARY LEADERSHIP OF SERVICE MEMBERS WHOSE IDEALS AND DEDICATION FOSTER A
POSITIVE WORKING ENVIRONMENT FOR REINFORCING AND FURTHERING THE INTEGRATION OF
WOMEN INTO THE NAVY AND MARINE CORPS. ESTABLISHED IN 1987, THESE AWARDS ARE
PRESENTED ANNUALLY TO RECOGNIZE THE INSPIRATIONAL LEADERSHIP OF A NAVY AND
MARINE CORPS OFFICER AND ENLISTED MEMBER ON ACTIVE OR RESERVE DUTY. THE CAPT
JOY BRIGHT HANCOCK AWARDS ARE CO-SPONSORED BY THE SEA SERVICE LEADERSHIP
ASSOCIATION (SSLA) AND THE MILITARY OFFICERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA (MOAA).
2. THERE ARE THREE CAPT JOY BRIGHT HANCOCK LEADERSHIP AWARDS: ONE SENIOR
OFFICER O4 AND ABOVE; ONE JUNIOR OFFICER O3 AND BELOW; AND ONE SENIOR ENLISTED
E7 THROUGH E9. THE CRITERIA INCLUDES INSPIRATIONAL, INNOVATIVE, AND
IMAGINATIVE LEADERSHIP, DEMONSTRATED BY EXAMPLE BOTH ON AND OFF-DUTY.
NOMINEES SHOULD BE MATURE LEADERS WHO HAVE SHOWN EXCEPTIONAL LEADERSHIP OVER
TIME AND HAVE PERSEVERED TO OVERCOME CHALLENGES WHILE SERVING. NOMINATIONS
SHOULD ADDRESS NOMINEE'S PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS, LEADERSHIP STYLE, AND
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT.
3. CANDIDATES MUST BE NOMINATED BY THEIR COMMANDING OFFICER OR OFFICER IN
CHARGE. THE NOMINATING COMMAND'S IMMEDIATE SUPERIOR IN COMMAND
(ISIC) MUST
PROVIDE AN ENDORSEMENT. IF AN ISIC RECEIVES MULTIPLE NOMINATION PACKAGES, THE
ISIC SHOULD ENDORSE AND FORWARD ONLY ONE NOMINATION FOR EACH CATEGORY .
NOMINATION PACKAGES MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
A. ISIC ENDORSEMENT;
B. CO OR OIC ENDORSEMENT;
C. NOMINATION WRITE-UP (NOT TO EXCEED TWO PAGES IN LENGTH);
D. NOMINEE'S BIOGRAPHY (NOT TO EXCEED ONE PAGE IN LENGTH);
AND
E. COMMAND POC'S NAME, E-MAIL ADDRESS, AND PHONE NUMBER.
4. NOMINATIONS ARE DUE BY 1700 EST, 25 JANUARY 2011. SUBMIT NOMINATION
PACKAGES VIA E-MAIL TO OSC JESSICA MYERS VIA E-MAIL AT JESSICA.MYERS

5. THE SSLA BOARD OF DIRECTORS WILL SELECT NAVY AWARD RECIPIENTS. COMMANDING
OFFICERS WILL BE INFORMED OF THE AWARD RECIPIENTS NO LATER THAN 7 FEBRUARY
2011.
THE NAMES OF THE WINNERS WILL ALSO BE POSTED AT HTTPS://WWW.SEALEADER .ORG AND

6. AWARDS WILL BE PRESENTED AT THE 24TH ANNUAL WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP SYMPOSIUM
SCHEDULED FOR 15-16 MARCH 2011 AT THE SAN DIEGO SHERATON HOTEL AND MARINA.
TRAVEL EXPENSES TO THE SYMPOSIUM WILL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PARENT
COMMAND; HOWEVER, THE SYMPOSIUM REGISTRATION FEE WILL BE WAIVED FOR THE AWARD
